Understanding Foam Rolling for Muscle Recovery
Foam rolling, or self-myofascial release, is a popular technique for relieving muscle tightness, soreness, and inflammation. It can improve your flexibility and range of motion.
**How it Works:**
By applying pressure to specific points on your body, you can aid in the recovery of muscles and assist in returning them to normal function. Think of it as a form of self-massage.
**Key Areas to Roll:**
- **Calves:** Sit on the floor with the roller under your calves. Use your hands to support yourself as you roll from your ankles to below your knees.
- **IT Band:** Lie on your side with the roller under your outer thigh. This can be intense, so control the pressure.
- **Thoracic Spine (Upper Back):** Lie on your back with the roller under your shoulder blades. Cross your arms over your chest and gently roll up and down.
**Important:** Avoid rolling over your joints or your lower back. If you find a particularly tender spot, hold the pressure for 20-30 seconds until the tightness releases.
